A young man has admitted to stealing ipads and laptops from Tafuna High School.

Mather Barja, was charged with burglary in the first degree, three separate counts of stealing, and two counts of property damage.

Today he was offered a plea deal where he would plead guilty to one count of stealing and the rest of the charges will be dismissed.

A summary of the case read by prosecutor Robert Pickett in court said the defendant had stolen 45 Apple iPads and several laptops belonging to Tafuna High School’s JROTC Program.

Barja, and two accomplices who were minors, broke into Tafuna High School on at least three different nights from early November, 2015 to January 1st, 2016.

The prosecutor made the point that the property which Barja stole belonged to the US Government so he also stole from the United States.

Picket said the monetary gain from the stolen items was $900 a piece for the iPads and the laptops are even more expensive.

The prosecutor said that most of the stolen items were returned and Barja has complied to making payments for the stolen equipment.

The plea deal was not denied but Chief Justice Michael Kruse has ordered that Barja’s hearing be continued to November 25th.
