Casidhe Mahuka Tops High School Science Symposium

Casidhe Mahuka of Faasao Marist High School won first place at the 29th Annual High School Science Symposium.

There 22 science papers which were reviewed by off-island scientists and university faculty from which 12 top papers were selected to present at the local symposium held last Friday,

The students presented their findings before local judges and Casidhe was judged the overall winner.

Her paper was on Identifying the Spawning Season of the Crown of Thorns Seastar.

Second Place was Juliana Rajamohan of South Pacific Academy who presented on Linear Vs. Logarithmic Changes: Which Works Best For Human Eyes?

Timothy Gayapa of South Pacific Academy  placed third with his paper: Testing Samoan Herbal Medicines as an Antibiotic.

Fourth Place was O’Riley Leau of Fagaitua High School presenting on, “The Correlation of Phosphate level and Rainfall in Aua streams and Seol Ji Lee of South Pacific Academy placed 5th  with his paper,  Effect of E-waste on Eisenia fetida .

The top five finalists will represent American Samoa at the Hawaii Regional Symposium (PS3) in January of 2017.

The Pacific Symposium for Science and Sustainability is an annual event coordinated by the Hawaii Academy of Science and funded by the Department of the Army, Navy and Air Force to encourage high school students to pursue research and study in science, engineering and mathematics.

Other student finalists of the local symposium were Karallyn Fitisone (SPA), Gayathri Murali (SPA), Monique Hollister (SPA), Gabrielle Langkilde (Faasao Marist HS), Tausala Leota (Nuuuli VocTech HS), Ji Hyun Oh (SPA) and Gingerlei Vaa (Fagaitua HS).

The symposium  is coordinated by the Office of Curriculum and Instruction and sponsored by the Department of Education.
