Fine art students of the American Samoa Community College strutted their stuff in a Latino Dance workshop on Wednesday.

They were learning from one of the best, a son of Leone, Tony Meredith, an award winning ballroom dancer.

Meredith is a professional ballroom dancer, choreographer and United States Professional Latin Champion.

His repertoire ranges from cha-cha, swing, tango, hustle, mambo, salsa, and rhythm and blues.

With his dance partner Melanie LaPatin Meredith won over 100 first place trophies and, in 1995, the Professional Latin Dance of the U.S. Dance Sport Championships.

The couple retired from competitive dance in 1998.

Meredith was visiting his sister Regina “Reggie” Meredith Fitiau an Arts Professor at ASCC just for a week and the workshop was squeezed in before Tony returns to New York.

Kuki Tuisasosopo who heads the Fine Arts Department at ASCC said the Latin dance workshops is part of preparations for ASCC drama production next year.

He did not reveal the name of the play but says that it is Latin American oriented and added that the students are familiar with the type of dancing needed for the upcoming musical.

Sophomore Norman Puipui Magua who is double majoring in Liberal Arts and Education said, “It’s always great to learn different dances from other cultures.”
