The owner of AVM Bernardo Engineering , the Filipino company with plans to build a food manufacturing plant in the territory, Mr. Anthony Bernardo, toured the Samoa Tuna Processors plant last week.

This was confirmed by STP General Manager Faafoi Palepua,

As to a newspaper report that a businessman from Samoa toured the STP plant last week, Palepua said this is not true, that the only visitors to tour their plant in Atuu was Mr. Bernardo.

Director of Commerce Keniseli Lafaele told KHJ News that the Filipino businessman met with STP management and had expressed AVM’s interest in continuing the processing operation.

Lafaele said it’s not known at this time if or when AVM will pursue this opportunity with a formal proposal to Tri Marine International, STP’s parent company in Bellevue, Washington.

The Director of Commerce says mention of four companies which have at least expressed interest in STP as reported by Samoa News is great news for the territory and hopefully one of the four or a combination will continue the operation of the processing plant without too long a pause.

Tri Marine announced the week before last that it was suspending canning operations at STP beginning December 11 and is considering options for the plant including an outright sale .
