Futiga Methodist Church Opens Study Center

Futiga Methodist Church has started a Study Center with assistance from the Amerika Samoa Humanities Council.

The project was officially opened in a ceremony Sunday afternoon with youth groups from different denominations attending.

The center is a place for students to do their homework and study.

On the study center’s first day yesterday about 40 students turned up.

Study sessions are offered on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6:00 pm and on Saturday from 8:00  – 10:00 AM.

Falefata Moli Lemana, Futiga Youth President and Project Manager says the sessions respond to a worrying situation affecting young people.

Falefata says eight tutors from the Futiga Methodist church in Futiga are assisting with the project.

And they are also using teachers from the Department of Education for instruction in the main content areas of English, Math and Science.

The resource people receive stipends which are used to purchase stationary and other materials for the students.

With midterms coming up, Humanities Scholar, Rev. Ropeti Faleatua’s hopes that they will be able to measure the improvement in the students academic performance and share the ideas with other denominations and organizations in order to effectively address a serious problem with the local education

Funding for the study center is for one year.
