New TA Policy Concerns Some Employees

Some ASG employees are reluctant to follow a new requirement for government funded travel.

The governor’s Chief of Staff Fiu Johnny Saelua sent a memo to directors and agency heads last month directing that all travel authorization requests must have a copy of the traveler’s official travel document, eg. passport or Certificate of Identity.

Fiu said that they have been experiencing some challenges in “appropriately collecting the Hawaiian Airlines miles generated from ASG TAs (travel authorization).”

The chief of staff was unavailable to answer questions about the challenges his memo refers to.

ASG employees who spoke with KHJ News said they were reluctant to give copies of their passports or Certificates of Identity for the purpose of processing their TA’s because of concerns with the security of their personal information and also possible identity fraud.

They question why the name of the traveler and the department they work for aren’t enough for the purpose of recording travel miles paid by ASG.

Government funded travel miles are to be used to send patients off island for medical treatment and also for educational related trips for students and educators.
