Gates Millennium Scholar Inspired by Cousin

American Samoa‘s 2016 Gates Millennium Scholar Nuanua Hosanna Iuli had a nerve racking journey to obtaining the scholarship.

She told KHJ News, “It was an extremely stressful process but was worth it.”

Nuanua had to write 8 one-thousand word essays, get 2 recommendation letters & 2 nomination letters.

It was during her Samoana Senior Ball night that her dad surprised her with a packet that informed her of her selection as a Gates Millennium Scholar 2016.

Nuanua, who’s studying anthropology at St. John University, said she was inspired by her cousin, Jared Afalava who is currently a sophomore at the university.

The institution is a private school with over 20, 000 students and Nuanua says campus life was the closest thing to home in her opinion.

She said, “It is close to New York City but far enough to be a gated campus not filled with the busy city life. It was the perfect fit for me.”

As one of her scholarship benefits she attended the  Gates VA Leadership Conference.

Nuanua says this  has changed her perspective on many things, positively and she is mentally prepared to tackle challenges in her educational journey.

Once she completes her education, she hopes to return  and make use of her new found knowledge and skills here at home.

Nuanua was thrilled to have American Samoa included in the  class of scholars and is thankful to the Lord for this blessing.

Her parents wouldn’t have to bear the financial hardship of  her college expenses.

Nuanua shared a personal message with other youth: “Don’t lose sight of your purpose. If you set your sights on something, think of what motivates you most and let it give you strength to follow through. For me, my parents were my motivation. The idea of relieving their burdens and giving them something to be proud of made me want to be better and do better. Whatever it is that motivates you, be steadfast in it and never lose sight of your faith in God.”

Nuanua thanked all those who helped her get the Gates scholarships.
