American Samoa is represented at the  U.S. Coral Reef Task Force meeting which is being co hosted by Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas next week.

Director of Marine and Wildlife Resources Dr. Ruth Matagi Tofiga and Coral Coordinator Kristine Bucchaneri are attending the meeting.

The task force, co-chaired by the Department of the Interior and the Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), includes leaders from 12 federal agencies, seven U.S. states and territories, and three freely associated states.

The Task Force’s mission is to lead, coordinate, and strengthen U.S. government actions to better preserve and protect coral reef ecosystems.

The 36th meeting will explore important activities in the area, including a commitment made by regional leaders to conserve at least 30 percent of the near-shore marine resources and 20 percent of the terrestrial resources across Micronesia by 2020.
