Cubans Were Here on a 30 Day Permit

Four Cubans who arrived in the territory a week ago were apparently looking to seek political asylum in the territory.

The two men and two women arrived here on a 30 day permit under the sponsorship of an employee of the Fono, and former lawmaker.

KHJ News is not disclosing the sponsors name until we are able to get comments from him concerning the group from Cuba.

There was a time when the Attorney General’s Office had a list of countries whose nationals were considered security risks and therefore were not allowed entry into the territory.

Cuba was one of them.

At any rate, a local attorney had apparently been contacted by what was described to KHJ News as human rights activists to represent the group.

The four Cubans were medical professionals and were apparently part of a larger group that was trying to seek political asylum in the United States using American Samoa as their gateway.

It’s not clear why but sources tell KHJ News the attorney later changed his mind when he had difficulty communicating with the group that first made contact with him.

The four Cubans also learned that it would take some time for their request for political asylum considered.

The group departed on the next flight out via Hawaii but it’s not known if they were ordered out or they left on their own.
