Lack of Money Stalls Approved Road Projects

The reason why some road projects which were approved and plans drawn up for some time have not started, is because of lack of money.

That’s according to testimony by officials of Public Works before a House Government Operations Committee hearing this week.

Construction of a secondary road in the Pavaiai area is expected to start after next month, when funding is made available.

This is according to Molefuatia Luki Tuitasi, Maintenance Work Manager for the Department of Public Works .

Tuala-uta Faipule, Vui Florence Saulo requested the hearing to find out why some long pending projects for Tuala-uta have not been started.

Some of the road projects were included in the Special Programs budget for FY2016 which is administered by the Governor’s Office.

Chief of Staff Fiu Johnny Saelua said about $200,000 is allocated for the Pavaiai secondary road.

He said funding is to be provided to pay the Tool Shop for materials for this project.

He mentioned that the project is also awaiting engineering plans.

From Public Works, Molefuatia explained that the department has laid out its plan for this project and the Land Use Permit is ready after he and the Tuala-uta faiuple walked the area.

He said vendors need their money.

And once the drawdown happens the project will start right away.
