The Department of Education hopes to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National University of Samoa to assist local teachers with certification in the main content subject areas, English, Math, and Science plus vocational trades.
DOE’s Assistant Director for Teacher Quality, Diana Ameperosa said that they should have this deal sealed by the end of this year.
An off island institute which evaluated the Bachelors of Education of teachers contracted from Samoa judged their degrees to be equivalent to American education degrees.
Ameperosa says DOE hopes to finalize the deal before the end of the year.

Assistant Director, Secondary Division Dr. Samasoni Asaeli, says the National University of Samoa is the best viable option for certification of local teachers.
He said that DOE was unsuccessful in getting this done with its long time partners like the University of Hawai’i.
