Rep Vui Takes Issue with Public Works

Tuala-uta Faipule, Vui Florence Saulo, is not at all impressed with the Department of Public Works and feels DPW is just providing lip service to her constituents.

She said on the House floor yesterday, four times during hearings with DPW officials, she’s requested a report of the Road Maintenance Fund and as of yesterday she had not received it.

Vui, Vice Chair of the House’s Public Works Committee is scheduling a hearing with Public Works Director, Faleosina Voigt, her deputy, Falava’i Taase, and senior DPW official, Luki Tuitasi.

The faipule also wants an administrator from the Governor’s Office, like Chief of Staff Fiu Johnny Saelua to be present.

Vui explained that there have been several road projects for which funding had been approved and which the Public Works Director said were cleared by Governor Lolo.

However none of the promised projects have been carried out or have been completed on time.

It was revealed in previous hearings that DPW is no longer in charge of the spending of money in the Road Maintenance Fund.

It’s the Governor’s Office that controls the funding and provides materials while Public Works provides just the labor.

The House Public Works Committee on road projects is tomorrow morning.

Vui said the hearing is not intended only to get information on Tuala-uta road projects…it’s also for other faipule to ask questions regarding projects for their own districts.
