Governor Discourages ASG Poll Watchers

Governor Lolo Moliga is discouraging government employees from becoming poll watchers and has instructed directors to look at leave requests from employees intending to be poll watchers on Election Day, November 8.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting which was held at the Election Office today, the governor said only teachers are allowed to be poll watchers as they only work 10 months of the year.cabinet staff

The governor said he’s observed that many government employees submit leave requests to be poll watchers but he feels there are many people who are unemployed and need jobs who should be given these opportunities.

Chief Election Officer Uiagalelei Dr. Lealofi Uiagalelei said that the Election Office will soon announce applications for poll watchers and training is scheduled in October for those who will work on Election Day.

In a previous interview with KHJ News, Uiagalelei said they are looking to employ between 200-300 poll watchers for the 2016 elections.

He told the meeting that 17,000 voters have been registered so far.cabinet election

The cabinet meeting was held on the ground floor of the Election Office in Tafuna and lasted about 2 hours.

Election Office staff served breakfast and lunch.

The meeting concluded with presentation of sua for the governor and all of the cabinet members by Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and family to reciprocate the gifts Governor Lolo and cabinet for the funeral of Mrs Pohakalani Mauga.
