As she wraps up her work in American Samoa, invasive bird specialists, Susanna Saveedra Cruz, with the help of donors, is organizing a thank you party for the network of myna bird trappers who have put a dent in the myna bird population.
Up to the end of June, the number of myna birds which have been trapped and killed by the trappers is 2,600.
Saveedra Cruz is departing the territory early next month at the end of her contract with the Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources.
She’s solicited donations from the Rotary Club and local businesses to host a party tomorrow at the Wellness Center at the ASCC Land Grant.
Appearing on the Samoa Sunrise Show with Sia Atofau the myna bird lady as she’s known, says the party is to show appreciation and encourage the volunteer trappers to continue after she leaves.
