About Drug Bust and Customs Chief

In a follow up to our story yesterday about contraband found in a container during a customs inspection,  the containers arrived on the Polynesia and is consigned to a woman who moved back to the territory two years ago.

Inside the container was a Chevy truck and a Yamaha motorcycle and many other household goods.

There were three zip lock bags of marijuana, some with seeds found during the search, along with weapons.

It’s believed that the woman has a medical marijuana card.

Meanwhile Chief of Customs Moetului Sipili Fuiava was quoted in a Samoa news story today that he had asked the media to hold off on a report concerning a package that was given to a Polynesian Airlines pilot to take to Manu’a.

The package turned out to contain marijuana.

While KHJ News is not mentioned in the newspaper story we are the only media that reported this story.

Here’s our account:  Moetulu’i did not ask KHJ News to hold off on the story.

We sought the name of the person to whom the package was sent to and the Customs chief said not to mention this at that stage as he was carrying out his investigation.  He promised to provide us with details afterwards.

We aired the story about the pilot being given a package to take to Manu’a, which aroused suspicion and the pilot turned the package to customs.

We did not air at that time information on the person to whom the package was addressed to, as the custom’s chief had asked.

Later on we only referred to the addressee as a government employee in Manu’a.

Moetului  did not ask us not to air the story about the incident or anything about a controlled buy which normally is police work.

In subsequent calls to Moetului concerning this case and another drug find that occurred at the Post Office, he has deflected questions preferring to tell us about the customs scanners which are on order, and customs discovery of 180 cartons of undeclared cigarettes.
