A report by American Samoa’s delegates to the Pacific Leaders Group meeting in French Polynesia last month provides insight on how another Pacific territory is using funding from its mother country to help protect lives in times of disasters.

The meeting was attended by Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and the governor’s executive assistant Iulogologo Joseph Pereira, late last month.

French Polynesia is investing heavily on building 200 miles per hour cyclone proof shelters and homes which have the same resistance capacity to weather Category 4 Hurricanes.

For its Cyclone Home construction program qualified resident pay 10% of the total cost of the home.

In some instances, the disaster affected residents were not required to pay anything.

About 1,000 new homes will be constructed before the year is up.

The total cost of a 4 bedroom home is $US 75,000 and it takes 1 to 5 months to complete one home depending on the availability of materials.

French Polynesia is making available construction drawings for any interested island country along with the construction technology to make the operation efficient and fast.
