Entomologist at the Land Grant Division, Dr. Mark Schmaedick, has only heard on the news about the banana disease which has afflicted plantations in the territory.

He told KHJ News he’s surprised not a single farmer had tried to call Land Grant for a scientific explanation of the problem.

President of the American Samoa Farmers Co-Op, Moe Malaki, reported that immature bunches of banana would just fall off before they are ready for harvesting.

This condition usually occurs in early January to February and sometimes in October, but not mid year.

The Entomologist says he will be happy to assist if the farmers need his help with the banana disease.

The same feedback came from the Department of Agriculture.

A senior employee said not a single farmer has notified them about the banana disease but if it’s going to affect the banana supply, its important that the Department of Agriculture is notified.

KHJ News tried to reach Coop officers to find out why they are not seeking help from Agriculture and Land Grant however  both the President and Vice President are currently off island.
