No Progress in Removing Boat off Auuu

Efforts to remove the fishing vessel that’s been stuck on the reef off Aunuu island since early April have so far been unsuccessful.

Either the surf is too high or not high enough.

Another attempt was made earlier this week to remove the fishing boat however the swells were not cooperating.

The operation has been turned over to the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa as the area where the fishing boat ran aground is part of the sanctuary.

The boat #1 Ji Hyun lost power as it was delivering supplies for the American Samoa Power Authority to Manu’a on April 15, and high surf generated by Cyclone Amos washed it on the reef.

The US Coast Guard successfully removed all of the fuel on board the vessel which remained upright throughout, then turned over the operation to tow it from the reef to the National Marine Sanctuary.

Meanwhile another fishing boat remains on the reef off the airport, a year after it ran aground.
