It’s not a formal announcement but at a meeting of the American Samoa Democratic Party last night, a member made known her intention to run for Congress.

Director of Education and sister of former Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, Vaitinasa Dr. Salu Hunkin Finau informed the party that she will be contesting American Samoa‘s seat in Congress.

Family and friends of the veteran educator have known since last year that Vaitinasa would be throwing her name in the congressional race.

It’s not the first time that Vaitinasa would be seeking public office.

In 2012, she unsuccessfully ran for governor with running mate Utoalii Iuniasolua Savusa.

Both she and Savusa were picked by the winner of the governor’s election Lolo Moliga as members of his cabinet.

American Samoa’s seat to Congress is currently held by first term Congresswoman Aumua Amata Radewagen who is seeking re-election.
