Aumua Commends Council for Scholarships

Congresswoman Aumua Amata commended Seuta’atia Kitty Simonds, Executive Director of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and its Education Committee for their announcement of the availability of three scholarships for academic years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.

According to an official release from the Council the scholarships will serve to build the capacity of American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI), to effectively manage their fisheries and related natural resources through the employment of their people.

The congresswoman thanked Executive Director Seuta’atia Kitty Simonds and her team for their foresight, dedication, and efforts they do on behalf of the people of the territories, and more specifically, American Samoa.

She said, “This scholarship program will provide our young people who are seeking a career in the marine and environmental fields another opportunity to further their academic careers.”

The program will allow those awarded scholarships to complete their junior and senior years of undergraduate work to obtain either a BA or BS in Marine Science from the University of Hawai’i at Hilo; a BS in Oceanography with a concentration in Fisheries Science at the Hawaii Pacific University; or completion of one of the following graduate degrees: MS or PhD in Marine Biology at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa’s Hawai`i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), a MS in Marine Science at Hawaii Pacific University, a MS in Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, or a MS in Biology at the University of Guam.
